What's craft beer?

 

最近、巷でやたらと耳にするこの「クラフトビール」というワード。

本場のアメリカのブルワーズ・アソシエーションがクラフトビールの定義を紹介しているので参考までに抜粋しておきます。（英語）

 「ビールは好きだけど、英語は大っ嫌い」って方のためにザックリまとめると、

１. 小規模であること

２. 独立していること

３. 伝統的であること

「・・・・。」

つまりはっきりとした定義はあるようでないんです。どこのサイトも微妙に違う言葉使って説明してるし。

でも、インドの青鬼とかYONA YONAとかコンビニでも置かれ始めてるし、

何かイベントとかちょくちょくやってるし、実はそもそもクラフトビール市場は右肩上がりなんです！

What is craft beer? What is the definition? What makes it different from "regular" beer?

The Brewers Association requires a "craft brewer" to be...

1. Small (produce no more than 6 million barrels annually)
2. Independent (have no more than 25% of the company controlled by a non-craft-brewer member of the alcohol industry)
3. Traditional (focus on traditional or innovative production methods)

A quick net search will show you, however, that this is just one of the many vaguely differing definitions of our favorite adult drink. Many simply consider any beer not brewed by one of the major breweries (e.g. Budweiser or Miller in the U.S., or Asahi or Sapporo in Japan) to be craft beer.

Perhaps you remember the term "microbrewery" and are wondering if it's still in use. The lingo has fallen out of the general beer lexicon mainly because it refers to a specific legal definition of a very small brewery (no more than 10,000 barrels annually, in some jurisdictions). Also, while breweries such as Sierra Nevada are considered major players in the craft beer scene, there is nothing "micro" about their production, distribution, or influence in the market.
